IDXChannel – National cement industry players are asked to prioritise various work programmes that lead to green transition values.
Not only participating, business actors are also asked to show a strong commitment in implementing the transition in a sustainable manner in the long term.
This was conveyed by the Chairman of the Indonesian Cement Association (ASI), Lilik Unggul Raharjo, when opening the International Cement Technology (Cemtech) Conference 2024 Asia, in Jakarta, from 3 to 5 June 2024.
According to Lilik, ASI’s move to hold Cemtech COnference 2024 is a form of initiative in enhancing decarbonisation efforts within the scope of one of Asia’s largest capacities.
‘This conference facilitates business leaders, cement associations in Asia, and government agencies to inspire each other and create opportunities for collaboration in increasing emissions reduction contributions,’ said Lilik, in his speech on Monday (3/6/2024).
Lilik said that until 2022, Indonesia’s cement industry had recorded a 12.9 per cent reduction in emissions compared to the 2010 baseline.
Not only that, ASI has also collaborated with the Ministry of Industry to design a decarbonisation road map to achieve Net Zero Emission by 2050.
‘This means that we still have a big space to innovate on decarbonisation,’ said Lilik.
During the three-day conference and exhibition, participants from 25 countries participated in a series of panel discussions and presentations on the latest innovations in the cement sector. These included the use of alternative fuels, clinker reduction, and the application of energy efficiency technologies.
Through this conference, it is hoped that an increase in the implementation of environmentally friendly practices in the cement industry will be realised. The implementation of environmentally friendly practices is considered a vital step in reducing global environmental impacts. According to Lilik, Indonesia has taken important steps in decarbonising the cement industry.
‘ASI is a pioneer in advocating sustainable practices in the cement industry in Indonesia by encouraging innovation in production, applying circular economy principles, and switching to cleaner production processes,’ said Lilik.
In line with national and global emission reduction targets, the cement industry in Indonesia is said to have implemented decarbonisation initiatives in its production processes.
For example, through the use of alternative fuels such as biomass, industrial waste, urban waste processed into refuse-derived fuel (RDF), and others to substitute coal.
‘We also continue to encourage the use of renewable energy to improve energy efficiency, as well as the application of energy use limit standards per tonne of cement products to encourage a more efficient and environmentally friendly industry,’ said Lilik.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Industry’s Director of Cement, Ceramics and Non-Metallic Mineral Processing, Putu Nadi Astuti, stated that Indonesia experienced positive economic growth with contributions from the non-oil and gas and manufacturing industries amid a challenging business landscape.
According to Putu, Indonesia’s cement industry must also encourage sustainability efforts to improve competitiveness in regional and global markets, especially initiatives to decarbonise production processes and deliver green cement products to continue to grow.
‘The Ministry of Industry supports these efforts as a step to address the impacts of climate change by developing regulations to accelerate the achievement of Net Zero Emission (NZE) from the industrial sector,’ Mr Putu said.
