ASI aims to use eco-friendly cement in Indonesia by the end of this year

JAKARTA – To reduce carbon emissions, the Indonesian government recommends the use of more environmentally friendly cement, known as Non Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) or Non-OPC cement.

Related to this, the Indonesian Cement Association (ASI) targets that the use of Non-OPC cement can be applied to construction throughout the country by the end of this year.

This was revealed by ASI Chairman Lilik Unggul Raharjo when met after the agenda of the International Cement Conference Cemtech Asia 2024 at the Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta, Monday, 3 June.

‘We hope that by the end of this year we can be completely 0 per cent (Non-OPC cement),’ he said.

Lilik said, currently there are already several projects in the government that use the cement. Even so, he did not reveal in more detail which projects had used the cement.

‘Because in the Ministry of PUPR there are already projects running and so on. So, later the new (projects) will actually use Non-OPC (cement),’ he said.

He explained that of the total domestic cement consumption, which has reached 65 million tonnes this year, 70 per cent of it is environmentally friendly cement packaged in bags.

‘Bagged cement is definitely environmentally friendly now. And the other 30 per cent is already environmentally friendly and some are not environmentally friendly,’ he concluded.
