Ministry of Industry Appreciates Cement Industry for Implementing Environmentally Friendly Technology

The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) continues to encourage the development of green industries in an effort to support the government’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. One of the steps is through a breakthrough in increasing efficiency in the use of electrical energy in the industry by utilising Waste Heat Recovery Power Generation (WHRPG) technology.

‘The Indonesian government is committed to reducing GHG emissions from the cement industry sector by 2.75 million tonnes CO2-eq with independent efforts or 3.25 million tonnes CO2-eq with international support by 2030,’ said the Head of the Industrial Services Standardisation and Policy Agency (BSKJI) of the Ministry of Industry, Doddy Rahadi when attending the inauguration of the WHRPG project at the cement factory of PT Conch South Kalimantan Cement (CSKC), Tabalong Regency, South Kalimantan, Tuesday (16/5).

The Head of BSKJI said that the Ministry of Industry appreciates PT CSKC for supporting the government’s commitment to reducing GHG emissions by using an environmentally friendly WHRPG power plant with a capacity of 7 to 11 megawatts (MW) generated from the clinker production line at the plant of 2 x 3200 tonnes / day.

‘The WHRPG project built by PT CSKC can convert residual gas into electrical energy which is then reused for the production needs of the cement plant,’ he said. This is in line with the government’s efforts to build a low-carbon and environmentally friendly green electricity system as part of the national commitment to counteract global warming.

‘Energy transition is a big issue in the country and can provide new hope for a better environmental, social and economic future as a result of policies to shift energy sources from fossil to renewable energy,’ said Doddy.

On the same occasion, Director of PT CSKC Wang Hongyu said that the company is committed to reducing carbon emissions in accordance with Law (UU) No. 71 of 2021 and Presidential Regulation No. 98 of 2021 which sets a target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Indonesia. ‘Therefore, we are implementing measures to reduce carbon emissions within the company, including the construction of WHRPG,’ he said.

WHRPG is an environmentally friendly technology that is able to utilise exhaust heat from the combustion process or production process as power generation energy. The development of the WHRPG facility is PT CSKC’s breakthrough by converting flue gas into electrical energy.

‘Unmitigated, this WHRPG power plant innovation is able to produce electrical energy while preserving the environment through reducing CO2 gas emissions which is one of the renewable electrical energy supplies,’ said Wang Hongyu.

According to him, the technical transformation project of the thermal power plant at PT CSKC utilises low-temperature and low-pressure boiler waste heat, and uses low-pressure turbine power generation technology.

Upon completion of construction, the WHRPG unit is expected to save 50,000 tonnes of coal annually at the power plant, save coal purchase costs of Rp33 billion, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 108,000 tonnes. ‘Of course, by practicing green and low-carbon business development, it will improve the efficiency of existing processes at PT CSKC,’ Wang Hongyu added.

Thus this Press Release to be disseminated.
